Overclocking:
We overclocked the six GeForce 7900 GS cards using NVIDIA's coolbits registry hack. This should give an indication of how well this video card overclocks, but please bear in mind that your own mileage may vary. Because of the wide spread of video cards we have here, it should give you a good idea of how far you can expect to push a GeForce 7900 GS, too.
BFG Tech GeForce 7900 GS OC:
The stock clocks on the BFG Tech GeForce 7900 GS OC are 540MHz core and 1360MHz on the memory.
We managed to get the card stable at 617MHz core and 1568MHz on the memory - that's a pretty impressive start.
EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO Superclock:
The stock clocks on the EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO Superclock are 500MHz core and 1380MHz on the memory.
The card was completely stable and artifact free at 600MHz core and 1624MHz on the memory. Not bad.
Galaxy GeForce 7900 GS:
Galaxy's GeForce 7900 GS is shipped with the core clocked at the same 540MHz that the BFG Tech 7900 GS OC is clocked at, but the 1.2ns memory is clocked at an impressive 1500MHz.
There was plenty of headroom in this card on the memory front. We managed to get the card stable with a rather dizzy 1730MHz. Meanwhile, we were able to get the core stable and artifact-free at 609MHz.
Inno3D GeForce 7900 GS:
Inno3D's card comes clocked at NVIDIA's reference frequencies, meaning a 450MHz core clock and a 1320MHz memory clock.
We managed to get the card running completely stable at 573/1580MHz. Not too bad, considering the lower starting point.
Point Of View GeForce 7900 GS:
Point Of View's GeForce 7900 GS is clocked at exactly the same speeds as the Inno3D.
The card was artifact free at 554/1568MHz - that's not exactly disappointing, but it was the lowest overclock we achieved out of all of the cards. Competition is tough on this front...
XFX GeForce 7900 GS 480M Extreme:
XFX's 7900 GS 480M Extreme comes clocked at a conservative 480MHz core, while the memory is clocked at 1400MHz.
We managed to achieve some rather incredible clocks on this particular card - the core clock was the highest of the group test at 639MHz, while the memory clock was the second highest at 801MHz. These settings were completely artifact free after a couple of hours of Counter-Strike Source.
Summary:
Overall it seems like GeForce 7900 GS is an incredibly overclockable chip. GeForce 7900 GT wasn't a bad overclocker either, so the trend seems to have continued with GeForce 7900 GS. At these clock speeds, there should be many situations where the card actually outperforms a
GeForce 7950 GT.
